Weight Loss, Why not just stop eating?

One sure way to lose weight, it might seem, is simply to stop eating for a while. Simple as it sounds, that idea is fraught with potential problems.

The basic weight loss equation certainly remains valid in this case: using more calories than are consumed results in weight loss. If you don’t take in calories by eating, it’s fairly easy to satisfy that equation. Your body burns 70 calories per hour even just sitting idle on the couch.

But while you may be idle, your body’s systems are not.

First of all, the body – deprived of food – will slow down the metabolism and burn calories more slowly. weight loss can be sudden at first, but the rate slows very soon thereafter.

At first, it goes after glycogen stored in the liver and converts it to glucose to burn for energy. That energy is used to power all the body’s activities.

When that is used up (to a degree), the body then begins going after the energy stored in the bonds of certain molecules in fat cells. The process is called ketosis and accounts for why your breath sometimes smells like fingernail polish (made with ketones) after hard exercise.

So far, that all sounds good. You burn calories, reduce body fat and lose weight. Exactly what you wanted. But, unfortunately, this isn’t all the body is doing under these circumstances.

Because of the relatively rapid weight loss/calorie burning from this method of ‘dieting’ the body will experience a ‘rebound’ effect. In other words, it will cause you to crave food like crazy. The food you do eat will cause you to put on more pounds than you lost. The body is compensating for a radical deficit.

At the same time, there are serious health risks to simply starving or a long term fast. Going without food for a few hours or even a day isn’t dangerous, though it can be uncomfortable since you’ll get very hungry. But this method causes a number of carefully balanced nutrients to get out of whack.

It upsets the delicate balance of insulin, sugar and a variety of other essential compounds. Apart from regulating energy levels, they influence hormones that regulate the brain and nervous system.

Concentrations of potassium and sodium get out of balance unless you compensate with sports-style drinks, which can be more difficult to adjust in the absence of food. Those minerals are key to regulating the heartbeat, not to mention being found in every cell of the body and the fluid in between where they participate in an enormous variety of vital tasks.

Fatigue, dizziness and difficulty concentrating are only three of the milder symptoms that will result. Dehydration is likely, since much of the fluid we gain is from food, not just liquid. That can easily lead to heat stroke if the weather is at all warm and you are even a little active.

The kidneys will have a more difficult time filtering properly. They clean waste material from the blood, play a role in regulating blood pressure and stimulate the bone marrow to make red blood cells.

The odds of heart attack are increased, brain function suffers,… the list is endless. Even if the fast is ended long before death (at about 4 weeks), serious physical effects would occur.

Instead of fasting, eat a balanced, healthy diet of limited calories – combined with an age and circumstance-appropriate exercise program and find a way to stay on track.  Motivation is the key to staying with any new kind of life style. Lets not kid ourselves, what permanent weight loss requires is a permanent change in life style.  Hypnotherapy is one of the best ways to create a new habit and get rid of old negative or unhealthy ways of thinking about food.  That is the surest way to lose pounds safely. Your physical health will be in harmony with your mind and your new healthy eating/exercise habits will become part of who you are.

Stopping Test Anxiety

Test Anxiety just like any Anxiety is overcome using hypnosis.  Test anxiety causes the student to become highly stressed.  Often times the feeling is more like panic then simple anxiety.  When the body goes into hyper drive so does the mind. This creates the flight or fight response and drives blood flow away from the brain.  This then creates the “self fulfilling prophecy” so common with fear.  The fear does to the brain exactly what the student does not want. It takes away his ability to remember the answers, the ability to think clearly.

I use hypnosis to create a feeling of calm that is linked to the test taking experience on a subconscious level.  So the new feeling of calm now becomes automatic.  I also help the student be better prepared and more confident of their ability to absorb the information during study sessions and increase their recall and focus.

Recently, I worked with a financial planner who was scheduled to take an important exam. She was completely panicked since in the past she did not do well in test situations.  She was so anxious about the test which was 3 weeks away that she was having problems sleeping and studying effectively.  We worked together for 5 sessions and she felt calm and confident during the test and passed the exam with flying colors.

I work with children and adults to enhance their test taking ability and overcome fears. Hypnosis serves as the bridge to the subconscious mind and gives much faster results then other types of interventions.

Happiness and Hypnosis

Happiness has been in the new’s recently.  People want to feel happier and why shouldn’t we all feel good? Books like “Stumbling on Happiness” and”The Happiness Project”are very popular now in part due to the negative news and economic downturn.  I am writing a book  titled “The Power of Choice”  and it includes my ideas and experiences in transforming my life and increasing my clients levels of happiness by increasing there ability to chose better.   I have used hypnosis and NLP to develop myself and yesterday I described my first experience with hypnosis.

It is pretty obvious why I wanted to change my state of mind.  I wanted to feel different.  Growing up in a fairly isolated place tends to make one introspective. All of that inward focus in childhood can be unhealthy.  My mother tended to give mixed messages.  On one hand she believed in positive thinking.  She read Dr. Norman Vincent Peale’s book “The Power of Positive Thinking” and encouraged us to be positive.  On the other hand she was anxious and put her fears squarely onto the girls in our family with the message that “we could be killed” if we attempted to ride a bike or go sledding on a big hill or take a walk by ourselves.  I believe that I was mildly depressed in childhood and if I had been in elementary school now I would have been diagnosed with ADHD.  Instead I simply spent a large part of 1st grade in the corner with my desk.

When it comes right down to it, what I wanted was to feel happy.  That’s what everyone wants.  Right?? I read books and tried to be happy.  In college I tried some other avenues as many of my age did back in the 70’s but to no avail.  I always came back to me.  At some point it came to me that if I wanted to be happier I didn’t need to change my circumstances so much as I had to change myself.  The way I thought had to change.  What I focused on needed to become what I wanted to have and not all the things that weren’t working.

I explored meditation, and have practiced yoga consistently now for over 30 years.  These two things have helped tremendously.  But being a person with a strong drive to improve they just weren’t fast enough for me.  Hypnosis is brief therapy and works relatively quickly.  If you know what you want hynosis can help you get there.

Paralyzed by Fear

Are you paralyzed by fear? Powerful words indeed. Or as FDR once stated, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”.  Another incredibly powerful statement of the power that fear exerts over all of us. So what is it about fear that makes it such a powerful emotion?? Its power lies in our instinct to survive. That primal, basic part of the brain, the limbic system sounds the alarm and then a cascade of neurologic activity follows. The fear response is based upon our memories and experiences, our learned fears from the past. However worries and anxieties are out in our future. So obviously since it helps us to survive we need it, right? We need fear as a call to action when something dangerous to our survival happens. However as FDR so succinctly stated, fear is something to be feared as well. The problem lies in too much fear. Unrelenting chronic fear is based on the possibility of danger and is derogatory to our health and wellbeing. It creates high levels of stress hormones and that creates disease. Also unrealistic fears or phobias are capable of totally controlling our lives. So what else can we learn about fear? It is based on the past and we can trigger it by worrying about the future. But right now there is no fear. If we stay in the present moment. We let go of old memories and fears from our past and stop focusing on the possibility of terrible things happening in our future. Fear disappears. In order to do this we need to change the way we think. We need to take back some of the control. Fear is an out of control emotion. If you let circumstances control you when good things happen then you will also allow fear and negativity to rule your life when things are not going well. As reasonable people we need to be living in reality. If things are really in a negative place in your life then thinking to yourself that your life is great is a delusion. However when things are going well in life and we spend our free time worrying about what might happen to change our life for the negative, that is also deluded thinking. So many business people today whether in sales or as an entrepreneur are finding their production and effectiveness declining due to fear. Fear has always been a problem in sales and many others in business people have fear evidenced as procrastination and Anxiety. Overcoming fear is simple and yet as many simple things it can be fairly complex as well. Just change the way you think, right? Oftentimes that is easier said than done When things go in a less then positive direction in my life I get into training for success…. 1. Change self talk using: Gratitude meditation self-hypnosis 2. Take control of your body/exercise to get out of fear. 3. Role model /have a vicarious experience of success. 4. Take action feel the fear and do it anyway. 5. Visualize what you want and not what you fear. By utilizing these techniques you will gain a feeling of control and soon fear will be a thing of the past.

The Common Misconceptions about Hypnosis

Many of the common misconceptions about hypnosis have originated in the minds of Hollywood writers. hypnosis and NLP are typically portrayed in a fantastic and sensationalistic manner. The idea that you are under someone else’s control is one of the most common misconceptions. Murder mystery writers love this one since it gives them a new angle for a story. This myth has been disproved over and over again but still persists. A second misconception is that the person in hypnosis is going to be talking. This is something that would typically only happen in regression hypnosis. I may ask someone for a signal such as nod of the head or movement of a finger, but in a typical hypnosis session I am the only one talking. This fact is a huge relief to most of my clients. Many of my clients expect that they will not be aware of where they are and they won’t remember what is said in hypnosis. This is also not true. In hypnosis you are aware of what is happening around you and if you wanted to you could get up and walk out of the room. Hypnosis actually increases focus. You will simply feel relaxed and comfortable. Another common misconception is that hypnosis is somehow against religion. This could not be further from the truth. Why shouldn’t we use our minds to the best of our abilities? This one is promoted by the fearful and ignorant. Finally, the misconception that if you can be hypnotized it means you are not as intelligent as those who cannot. Again a misconception. Anyone who wants to be hypnotized and has at least an average level of intelligence can be hypnotized. In my practice, I find those who are the most intelligent, educated and have the ability to focus are the easiest to hypnotize. The truth about hypnosis is that it is an altered state of mind which we all visit from time to time. It is simply a state of focused concentration most easily accessible when one is completely relaxed. The mind learns quickly in this focused state and that is why changes to feelings, behaviors and habits can take place in much less time when using hypnosis. When someone is in hypnosis they feel relaxed and comfortable. When they come back to their conscious mind after a session they typically feel relaxed and more positive and confident then they have in some time. After the session they may also notice changes in a habit, new positive healthy self talk or simply an overall feeling of well being depending on the focus of the session. They will also sleep better than they can remember sleeping in a long time.

What Makes a Better Salesperson?

There are many traits that make up someone who is the consummate salesperson.  Things like confidence, elegant communication, empathy, the closing instinct and the ability to motivate oneself without instant gratification.

So you are not a “salesperson”.  Why should you keep reading? Because anyone who is an entrepreneur or just wants to be more successful in personal relationships can benefit by being better at influencing others.  I could go into the details at length of how to be better at selling.  In fact I will go into some of those details next time.  But today I am going to tell you the one thing that sets the average sales person, entrepreneur or business person apart from those who really succeed.  That thing is the desire to constantly improve.

Whether it’s improving your close ratio or your attitude.  The best sales people are the ones who constantly learn the techniques that will set them apart from the rest.  They don’t “try” anything.  What they do is take committed action.

I recently conducted a sales training for a large bank.  I taught them techniques from NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) which they could use to up there close ratio and also tools to keep a consistent positive attitude. Afterwards I had several account executives come to me for more info on my sales performance program. When I spoke to their national sales manager at the close of the seminar, she mentioned how it was the top reps who were interested in the program.  She wondered how to get the average reps to be more motivated.  This is a common dilemma, without the desire to learn and improve those sales reps will remain average.

So the question is do you want to be average?  If not then get up, get out and learn or do something new.  Because if you do what you have always done you will get the same results you have always gotten.

Positive Thinking in Negative Times

Thoughts are things.  When we focus on the negative we create more negativity in our lives.  It is fact that negative is more powerful then positive.  You may have noticed this in the news media. Part of the reason seems to be that it is human nature to want to know what might go wrong, just in case it does.  Many people spend a large part of their lives focusing on “the news” or what passes for news today. It has been proven that when people spend large amounts of their time consuming the negativity of “the news” that they become more negative and depressed.  What real purpose does this serve?  Are people actually better prepared by hearing what might happen?  Actually they are not and the negativity actually creates negative behaviors and by doing so brings the very things they feared in the first place into their lives.

When life seems to turn on us many people will cope by drinking, eating or smoking more. Obviously this creates even more problems in their live.  I see this every day in my clients.  It is exactly when they need to be more focused and healthy that they become less so.  I help them using hypnosis and NLP by giving them back the power and control over their thinking and by doing so they gain more control in their lives.

What is hypnosis?

There are many misconceptions about hypnosis.  One that I hear most frequently is that you will lose control.  This is actually the opposite of what takes place in hypnosis.     Hypnosis is a normal, natural state of mind and everyone spends part of their day in this mental state.   The transitional phase before you fall asleep at night is one of those times. Hypnosis gives you the same feeling of focused concentration that you feel when you are engrossed in a book or movie.  That same feeling of "flow" as described by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in his book titled "Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience".  That state is very useful because when we are in it we feel totally connected and focused. Golfers and other athletes strive for this feeling. Often time flies by and we feel very refreshed.    It is in this state that we access our subconscious mind.  Approximately 88% of mental function takes place in the subconscious and yet we spend very little real effort in improving that function. It is so easy to change when you get this part of your mind aligned with your conscious goals.      If you find it difficult to change or are not achieving your goals you are probably neglecting this most powerful instrument of change.  Imagine how hard it is to delete a specific program from your computer if you don’t know how to remove it from the hard drive? The subconscious mind is basically your mental hard drive and contains everything that you have experienced in your life.  If you don’t maintain it, just like a computer drive it will become corrupted and eventually crash.

How to Stop Smoking

Helping my clients stop smoking is probably one of the easiest things that I do. Once someone has decided that they want to stop smoking or go back to being a "non-smoker" the process is quick and relatively simple. It is easier than many other issues because it is so unhealthy. No one can really dispute that fact and unlike eating, you do not need to smoke to live. The process involves working with the individual to determine the reasons behind their habit. We also reframe the "addiction" to nicotine. Then I record a powerful "stop smoking" CD while I hypnotize the client. This works incredibly well. The typical result is that the individual stops smoking that day and then comes back for at least 1 reinforcement session. For more information on addictions and habits check out my website. http://www.neuro-solutions.com/
